The spring sowing area in Ukraine will be increased by, at least, 1.7 mln. ha, which will require an additional resource support. Due to the adverse weather conditions last fall, farmers didn’t sow about 0.9 mln. ha of winter grain and 237 thous. ha of rapeseed; in addition, there is no germination in an area of almost 600 thous. ha according to Yaroslav Krasnopolskiy, First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, reported the press service of the Ministry of Agrarian Policy on March 1.

As of the reporting date, early spring crops have been sown on 45 thous. ha in Kherson, Odesa, and Mykolaiv regions.

“In the structure of sown areas, special attention should be paid to crops of spring wheat, buckwheat, and sugar beet. Measures must be taken to establish a sufficient reserve stocks of seeds of spring crops to enable reseeding of winter crops. Also, the Food and Grain Corporation must improve the financing of spring-field works in order to accelerate the conclusion of forward contracts,” said Ya. Krasnopolsky.
